What Are The Critical Control Points During A Technical Inspection?

Many counter-visits results from defects on the vehicle that can be corrected by performing certain checks. Here is our checklist of the nine important points of technical control frequently concerned by a counter visit.

Vehicle Registration

The check of license plates at the front and back is to ensure that they comply with the regulations in force. The lettering must, of course, be consistent with the registration certificate. Plates must be legible, undamaged and well secured. Two types of lettering are accepted: AA-XXX-AA (for vehicles registered since 2009) and XXXX AA XX (for vehicles registered before 2009).

As tires are the only elements in contact with the ground, they are the first guarantors of the quality of braking. This is why regular visual inspection of the tires is essential. Several simple checks are to be made. First make sure that the pressure is correct and that they are not deformed (no herniation or tear on the sidewalls, no foreign body in the tread, no deformation of the rim). Check the wear indicators: the depth of the grooves in the tread must not be less than 1.6 mm. It should also be noted that the tires of the same axle must be identical in structure and brand.

If your brake pads and discs are too worn, it is recommended that they are replaced as a precaution. If you notice while driving that during braking your vehicle moves to the right or left, it means that your brakes are in poor condition or unbalanced. It is also necessary to check the brake fluid.

Visual inspection of the shock absorbers ensures that they do not leak. This is to check the absence of oil stains which could indicate a leak in the circuit, to make sure that there is no deformation of the rod or the body of the shock, not of corrosion and that the condition of the fixings is correct.

If your exhaust gives off a black smoke at startup, it should alert you to the pollution level of your vehicle. Also, make sure your muffler does not leak and is properly attached.

This is to check the condition of the windshield and windows  (no cracks more significant than 30 cm), windshield wipers and interior and exterior mirrors. It should also be ensured that the mirror adjustment control and the windscreen demisting system are working correctly.

Lighting And Signage

It is advised to check the correct operation of all your lights at the front and rear (position, crossing, road and stop lights ), your turn signals, the distress signal, the three the brake light, the illumination of the rear registration plate and reflectors rear and side. Finally, make sure your horn works well.

Structure And Bodywork

When visually inspecting the body, make sure that the body does not have protruding parts that could injure a third party. The correct opening, securing and closing of the doors (from the inside and the outside), the boot, the tailgate, and the bonnet must also be checked.

Cockpit Equipment

To make sure the excellent condition of your equipment, here are all the items to control: the seating and the correct operation of the adjustment, the presence and proper operation of seat belts. If you are equipped with a baby seat, we advise you to remove it before coming to pass the technical control so that it does not interfere with the checks. Otherwise, the controller will have to remove it.
